RIP ...

... Film Legend Charlton Heston Dead at 84.

There is a terrible film of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar starring Jason Robards as Brutus. Robards's performance is one of the worst ever recorded. But Heston, as Marc Antony, is fabulous. His deliver of the "Friends, Romans, countrymen ..." is the best I ever saw.

I too thought Charlton Heston was great in that movie. I have this recollection that he produced or directed it. Did it not move on into Antony and Cleopatra also, or was that a later film? In any event, Heston did do an Antony and Cleopatra with Hildegard Neil as a very creditable Cleopatra. She is married to Brian Blessed, that larger than life actor, who is such fun. He was an excellent Augustus (Cleopatra's famous nemesis) in the BBC's classic I Claudius, with Derek Jacobi as Claudius. We recently re-watched I Claudius on DVD, and it has stood the test of time very well.

  2. Very good, Maxine! He directed the Antony and Cleopatra, whoch I ad not known of, but must now track down. And you're right: Brian Blessed was an excellent Augustus (wasn't Sian Phillips Livia?).
