Apparently, the young woman's "... ambitions to be a concert pianist, actress, or novelist..." didn't work out. Selling intimate letters is a somewhat less exalted occupation, but probably scratches her exhibitionist itch.
It all sounds rather sad, don't you think. Also, it brings to mind the artist in "The Ebony Tower" - if memory serves, as it may well not in this case. Fowles was a strange dude, as his journals make clear.
