Quite possibly ...

... An Overlooked Literary Genius? (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

The art of storytelling is definitely underrated. It is, like the art of poetry, something one either has or doesn't. You can learn how to write verse, but poetry is a gift. So is storytelling.

  1. Rebecca was the first "adult" novel I ever read (aside from the snippets of Peyton Place). I'm not sure if it was that or Du Maurier's abilities, but I have a memory of Manderley that rivals places I've actually visited. And I can still call up an image of Rebecca.

  2. Though I'm reluctant to admit it, there's definitely something to the storytelling gift. My husband, for example, could tell our kids the most detailed, complicated, fascinating serial adventures off the top of his head in a wide range of voices - no, he doesn't write - while I would stutter through a sentence or two at most, then reach in desperation for a book. Hm ...
