A select best ...

... Signs of Life 2008: The Best Books We Read This Year. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

The only one that holds any allure for me is Sebastian Barry's The Secret Scripture, which I have but have not yet read.

  1. I agree.. a quite prosaic list overall. I enjoy reading Paste magazine for their coverage on the dwindling amount of decent popular music, but their literature coverage seems to be mostly an afterthought.

  2. Ditto on the blandstanding; but, an interesting notion only insofar as it provides the foundation for us to list our personal bests in a quartet of categories (poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and cyber-publication):

    1. The Selected Gwendolyn MacEwen (Meaghan Strimas, Ed.)
    2. The Last Novel (David Markson)
    3. The Letters of Ted Hughes (Christopher Reid, Ed.)
    4. Mortal Ghost (L. Lee Lowe)
