IMHO, Anatole France is absolutely correct. However, I might be partial as I am particularly drawn to the relatively modern species of autobiographical criticism (which drives some orthodox academics absolutely bonkers).
I like to think I am a pretty good critic. But I'd so much rather be a pretty good writer -- the creator, not the discerner. Sigh.
