Don't mess ...

... with your readers: Killing characters is the real crime for fans. (Hat tip, Paul Davis.)

Somebody should remind Rankin that the only reason why anybody gives a rat's ass why he says or does anything is because of Rebus, not him. It isn't about you at all, Ian.

    Rebus, I think you will find, is a creation of Rankin's; not the other way round. The only reason anyone gives a rat's arse about Rebus or anything he does is because Rankin writes what he does. It really is all about Rankin. Very strange way to look at the author as subservient, incidental even, to his own creation. Do what you want with your own art, Ian; to think otherwise would be to triumph emasculation of self.

  2. I've talked with quite a few authors who cheerfully admit that they work at the behest of their characters. Dutch Leonard, for instance, talks about his characters as though they are friends of his. I hardly suggested that Rankin did not create Rebus, by the way. But nobody was buying any Inspector Rankin books.
