I'm a big fan of Joyce Carol Oates. (I'm just glancing up at my bookshelf and see "We Were the Mulvaneys" and "The Gravedigger's Daughter." "Them" was the first novel I ever read of hers.) If her novels have a common denominator, it is that something absolutely shocking happens at some point in each story. I brace for it. It could explode in my face on any given page.
I'm sorry she lost her first husband, but it sounds like she's doing OK.
