We recently went to see The Ghost Writer, for which novelist Robert Harris wrote the screenplay. I had read the novel about a week before. Both novel and film are excellent, but the novel is slightly better.

I think the classic in this genre is To Kill a Mockingbird: the screenplay totally satisfied the author but also created a film that's a work of art in its own right.
