As to your comment--emphatically agreed--and he does have something of the perverse genius about him. What he did well has never been done as well by others.
He may not have been a genius, but he was certainly a hell of a lot of fun. So who cares? And PATHS OF GLORY wouldn't be the cinematic masterpiece it is, had not Thompson been on screenwriting duty. (For that matter, Thompson was instrumental in ensuring that Kubrick, who was a genius, had a film career. Alas, Kubrick's ego caused him and Thompson to split.)
