The real problem underlying this is the presumption on the part of publishers and educators that kids are stupid. It would be quite easy to explain to a class that, once upon a time, things were different in this country from the way they are now and words were spoken in the past that are not approved of now.
Or, maybe they could put out a gangsta-rap version of the text that would restore the otherwise unmentionable term.
