On the other hand ...

... the mediocre are always at their best: the unutterable mediocrity of contemporary Britain. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

  1. This article reminded me of a story told to me about 20 years ago by a colleague. My colleague had the job of looking after Roy Jenkins (a former deputy leader of the Labour Party) on a visit to our university. As part of a conversation, my friend asked Roy what he thought of Kenneth Clark, then a member of John Major's cabinet. 'Oh!' cried Roy, 'The man is a complete oik!' (An uncouth or obnoxious person, OED.) Nothing, you note, about Clark's politics or ability to run a government department.
