During nearly decades of working for a newspaper I saw more of these come and go than I can even begin to remember. Perhaps my favorite was the oat-bran craze. What I liked about it was the sheer pointlessness of it. After all, if you eat Quaker Oats, you're getting some bran -- that's why they call it "whole oats." On the other hand, bran by itself has no nutritional value whatever, and eating it in quantity can result -- and did -- in some severe cases of constipation. Of course, as Steven notes, it's a good idea to eat healthy food -- stuff that's grown.
