Elusive terminology ...

... Semantic Seizure | Bryan Appleyard. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

Well, last year, in Boulevard, I wrote the following: "Postmodernism is, quintessentially, a Humpty-Dumpty word. (“When I use a word,” Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, “it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.”) It’s almost a terminological via negativa. Don’t know quite how to categorize a painting, poem, or theory? No problem. Call it postmodern." I also noted that "according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, “That postmodernism is indefinable is a truism.”
I don't consider myself a relativist, but I think I can fairly call myself a casuist. And I subscribe to Aquinas's moderate realism regarding universals.
But the really important thing to me is Bryan's post is what he says about Wallace Stevens. I think he is right.
