Hmm ...

But is opposition to academic knowledge necessarily anti-intellectual? It is ahardly the only approach to knowledge and it may well not be the best. Professors of philosophy are not necessarily philosophers.

  1. I tend to agree with you about academic knowledge per se, Frank, but the points made about Wikipedia and Facebook are pretty potent. The logic of those who claim the crowd is smarter than the experts is the same mob logic that Eric Hoffer outlined in "The True Believer" (speaking of great philosophers who were not allied with academic knowledge or professors of philosophy!). In my experience, Wikipedia is often pretty lowest-common-denominator, and there are cliques that deliberately target certain topics for re-editing in an effort to control knowledge.
