The Washington City Paper ran an article on this years ago, but with the canonical ten, rather than five.
I recall that the Gideons Bible was the winner by a large margin, but that the first runner-up was a test-preparation book for persons who wished to enlist in the military (there wasn't a war on just then). It seems to me that several others were much less literary than the books on this list.
