What think you?

... Rod Dreher - Why NPR religion show would fail. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

If Mark is correct — and I fear he is — the conclusion to draw is that Americans are simply too immature, from a religious point of view, to embrace a quality news-talk show about faith and values. To be precise, Krista Tippett’s program is a very high quality show about faith and values, but it’s not a news-talk show. News-talk programming has to be somewhat adversarial and newsy. That sort of thing makes many religious believers very, very nervous.

  1. First, who has the time to listen to talk shows? I don't find that I do. Second, is NPR the place for such a show? Little I hear persuades me that it is.

  2. Hi Frank!

There is a great blog www.getreligion.org that is written by a journalist and others and has covered religion and journalism for awhile. The tag line for getreligion is from William Schneider of CNN: "The press ...just doesn't get religion", or, in fuller form:
“On the national level,” said Schneider, “the press is one of the most secular institutions in American society. It just doesn’t get religion or any idea that flows from religious conviction.”
