... the five-time Grammy-nominated performer devotes much effort to ensuring that no more of America's 20th-century musical treasures end up in the Dumpster, either literally or figuratively. His calling as an archivist is almost as long as his performing career. He had just begun to sing and play in small bars around Los Angeles in his early 20s when, in 1977, he found a trove of pianist-composer Oscar Levant's own record albums in a Hollywood record shop. He returned them to Levant's widow, who in turn introduced him to the aging Ira Gershwin, the lyricist of many of his brother George's melodies.
