It is not a good idea, if you are writing nonfiction, to deviate too much from fact. Memory, for example,  can be imprecise, and making clear that you are writing about things as you remember them is itself one of the facts you have to make clear. And you should try to remember them as best you can. Otherwise, write fiction.
