I don't think it has much to do with snobbery. It has a lot to do with hierarchy. If you know your place and don't have to find it, because it has been assigned, as it were, you can get on with playing your role. It is rising on the ladder that has to do with providing for your descendents. Finding a place on the ladder and being content with it is more a matter of honoring your ancestors. 
The underlying problem with democracy is that a good many people do not feel especially comfortable without protocol.
