I once spent an entire day responding to a ferocious batch of emails after I was flamed by members of a "progressive" site. I am blessed with an almost sociopathic indifference to that sort of thing, but as it had to do with my job at the time, I felt obliged to respond. It wasn't until one of the emailers communicated to the rest of the horde that, while he didn't agree with me, he had to respect my unfailingly courteous responses that the whole thing suddenly stopped.
