… The Truth About French Parenting (and I Would Know) - Megan McArdle - Health - The Atlantic.
I still think there is at present a class of parents in the U.S. who butt into their kids' lives more than I think is healthy. Of course, when I was a kid, my mother and grandmother — who raised me — were out at work and my brother — who is seven years older than I — was out and about on his own. That meant summer vacation for me was a wonderful period of freedom. My exercise of that freedom would seem bizarrely tame, I suppose — I roamed the woods, read what I felt like, rode into Center City and visited museums on my own (oh, how bold that must seem). I thought and tried to write … and played ball with one friend and I, by slightly revising the rules to allow borrowing, played a marathon 32-hour Monopoly game. Now we'd all be supervised.
