In the West, sadly, there were well-meaning liberals who were reverse racists. In a patronising way, they would try and maintain their romanticised version of what Muslim culture should be, which actually is colonialist. Don’t tell me what my culture should be. If I think, as a Muslim, democracy is compatible with Islam and Muslim majority societies, then I don’t want some wellmeaning liberal to come to me and say it is not compatible with Islam and you are on a losing course. That was what was happening until the Arab uprising.
