Learn in context; question authority; be curious about all manner of experience;exercise body as well as mind; learn not by rote but by doing; engage with things rather than with words—these precepts should guide our educational system. If only they did. Common sense is not so common. Even Montaigne, though he had a healthy sense of self-esteem, was acutely aware of the limitations of his own knowledge.
