That was cool, and I think largely true. I first read Parker's fist three Spenser novels in of all places Indonesia where I was living for a year, and I have to agree that it was the writing that really stunned me. There were a couple of scenes of fighting that I had to read more than once, as Block says, because they were so incredibly powerfully written.
