...A strange English dialect
Maybe the tabloid media is more prone to using journalese in Britain. I regularly read Financial Times and Guardian and rarely come across words that I am not familiar with. Of course, American publications don't suffer from this malaise. Not that I am aware of, having read Philly Inquirer, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Christian Science Monitor and the big northeast daddies, among others.
