  1. I think one could do better than this. Mao wrote poetry (execrably, I was told, by one who claimed to know). Mussolini wrote at least one novel The Cardinal's Mistress, and wrote a biography of Jan Hus. Frederick the Great wrote poetry (also badly, in the judgment of Samuel Johnson, and of Voltaire). Julius Caesar wrote his Commentaries and Gallic Wars.
