Eastwood wasn't speechifying to the huge crowd from a teleprompted script. He was seemingly speaking straight from his head — you know, the illusion actors know how to create. It had an intimacy and riskiness that you just don't expect from a convention stage.
The upshot is that Eastwood's performance was controversial, which means it draws attention to itself, which means some will like it, some not. First rule of politics: Get people's attention.
