Re the comment about Americans wanting to read a "tragedy with a happy ending": I dislike the saccharine as much as anyone, but I hope it's not wrong to want to read a book that does something more than just talk about how awful things are.
Yes, I agree Shelley. I think Frank put it best when he said that art, if it does not serve a higher purpose by making sense of things, even if that sense is sublime or not, is no different from journalism.
