What I find surprising is how much I agree with ("our power of reason is very weak so we should be suspicious of central-planning. The core of my philosophy is epistemological modesty in that we can’t know much about the world"), though I still think Brooks is too much interested in making sure he keeps on the good side of those he wants access to. But he comes off as a pretty nice guy. I think his notion of himself as a Hamiltonian and Burkean is interesting — I'm not really sure that Burke and Hamilton fit that well together, though the Hamiltonian side would explain Brooks's tolerance of, even fondness for, centralized government. Basically, he sounds like … well, an old-time Northeastern Republican, a Prescott Bush type.
