… Mr. Knausgaard's scrutiny of the ordinary is a moving attempt to alert us to a life whose experiences go largely forgotten. Throughout the book, the narrator tries to catalog the now, to flash-freeze moments in language in order to thwart their disappearance. As Karl Ove explains, "the idea was to get as close as possible to my life," echoing an earlier declaration that he wants more than anything to write "the inner core of human existence."
