Hard to say ...

... Does Great Literature Make Us Better People? - NYTimes.com. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

Reading in a co-creative process. The reader must exercise his imagination in order to actualize the potency of the text. A Francis of Assisi will probably take away from a book something quite different from what a Genghiz Khan would. But it's hard to take entirely seriously a piece that begins with a reference to deploring "the dumbing-down of the school curriculum and the rise of the Internet and its hyperlink culture." The dumbing-down of the curriculum is one thing. What that has to do with the Internet escapes me. I'm also not sure what this hyperlink culture is, either. Is there something wrong with reading Terry Teachout's outstanding theater reviews online? Or visiting the OUP blog?
