Hmm …

… Wickedness, allied to the 'truth' of religious belief, can lead us to evil acts | Giles Fraser | Comment is free | The Guardian. (Hat tip, Rus Bowden.)

Religion is not unique in generating this dangerous sense of rightness. But, precisely because it is in the business of right and wrong on the grand scale, it makes this mistake more frequently.

Really? More than, say, political ideology, which in the case of communism and fascism racked up some pretty impressive numbers when it comes to death and atrocity. Religion itself doesn't make any mistakes. It doesn't do anything. Human beings make mistakes, often in the name of religion. Of course, in the case of Islam, one could argue that the faith itself is understood by some as encouraging violence. When Muhammad swept across North Africa in the seventh century, he wasn't holding revivals.

In the meantime, here's another piece from the Guardian: Why are liberals so rude to the right?
I have witnessed this sort of thing myself (and before anyone takes to labeling me a conservative, just remember that I'm a fan of Prince Kropotkin's Mutual Aid).
