To stage or not …

I suppose the greatest Shakespeare production I ever saw was Scofield's Lear. But I've some othery good ones. But I know what he means about the moden directorial style, which seems to me to be grounded in a lack of faith n the material. By the way, what exactly is "estuarine verse-speaking"?

  1. It's a reference to the so-called 'estuary accent' or 'estuary English', Frank - a kind of slack and unattractive Cockney that's spread a long way from the Thames estuary. We now have an Etonian Chancellor of the Exchequer deliberately adopting the 'estuary' glottal stop - heaven knows why...
