Objects of attention …

… Slugs Are For The Birds — Theodore Dalrymple. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I am very fond of birds, but do not consider myself a birder. The idea of joining a crowd to go watch our avian friends is abhorrent to me, and not just because I'm not fond of crowds. Walking in the woods or across a meadow by oneself and coming upon a bird one hasn't seen before has always struck me as a blessing. But it is the element of chance that makes it such. I like to know the names of the birds, flowers, and trees that I encounter, because I like to know the names of things. My life list of birds I have seen, were I  to compile one, would be repectable, I think, especially since I never went out of my way to see any of them. We just happened to run into each other. I've run into flocks of birders from time to time also. Invariably, I change direction.
