As far as I can tell, no one of note every came from McKeesport. Well, perhaps someone will step up to correct that statement.
Not only have I heard of it, but I heard of it because I know someone from there: the great concert pianist Byron Janis, who was born there in 1928.
I wonder why the pianist's name never came up in my McKeesport home? Well, the answer is obvious. The bluest of blue-collar homes was not where I heard anything about classical music. I would have to "escape" my limited worldview before I knew anything beyond the hometown favorite entertainments offered by Perry Como, Gene Kelly, Shirley Jones, and other nearby residents.
