Once the book was out in the public domain, however, Catton grew out of her authorial proprietorship. “I like the idea that a novel teaches you how to write it as you go along: when you begin writing a book, you don’t yet have the skills you are going to need to finish it, and perhaps, you aren’t even the person who is capable of finishing it,” she says.
