  1. Ah, Hawthorne comes dangerously close to suggestion religion and art are inventions. But, Hawthorne being Hawthorne, one can forgive his brush with heresy.

  4. True. But I have trouble seeing Hawthorne, the "anti-Puritan," embracing revelation. Perhaps I am like Hawthorne: too cynical. As always, though, your perspective helps me be a bit less cynical.
