Flannery O'Connor said this: "Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think universities stifle writers. I think they don't stifle enough of them." I say, "Amen to that, sister!"
Well, so much for creative writing programs. But the irony is rich considering O'Connor's matriculation at the Iowa writing program.
My former university's creative program was a grotesque joke. No one was urged to writer better of English. They were instead urged to be more expressive. That is a bad strategy for any fledgling writer.
