Books and bars …

… Librarians' Group: The book club at the big house: How reading makes a difference in prison. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I still arrange for shipments of books from The Inquirer to the Philadelphia Prison System. And I have visited the library there.

  1. Frank,

Yes, when they get out they will be able to write a better ransom note and bank holdup note - Ha.

We provide gyms and weights in prison so criminals can become stronger muggers and robbers, so let's make them smarter criminals as well.

I think mentioned this before - why note give the books to the vicitms of crime, rather than the criminals? Or at least divide the loot.

There are shelters for abused women and children and other places where vicitms of crime might like a book or two.

My sympathy lies more with crime vicitms than criminals.

    Paul

  2. That's not a bad idea. Will look into it. A good many already go to family courts. One of the interesting things I learned on my visit is that teachers love to work there. The students actually want to ibe in class - beats a cell - so they did pay attention and there was never any trouble because, well, it is a prison and there are guards.
