I have previously told this story elsewhere, but I once received a brief and gracious hand-written note from Samuel Beckett in response to my letter to him in which I invited him to my production of _Waiting for Godot_ in 1972. Until the note was destroyed by a mean-spirit harridan during a disintegrating relationship, it was my most prized possession; it remains in my memory as one of the great moments of my life -- I had received a personal note from one of the world's greatest writers.
