I've never had the slightest interest in speed reading. I like to hear what I am reading, and reading should be leisurely activity. I agree with Somerset Maugham, though, that sometimes deft skipping is called for. Moby Dick, I think, can be read without undue attention to the minutiae about whales, just as Tolstoy's essays in War and Peace can be passed over. I've read the book twice and skipped them both times.
