Hmm …

Book by Biologist Jerry Coyne Goes Too Far Denouncing Religion, Defending Science - Cross-Check - Scientific American Blog Network.

Let's start with Coyne. He doesn't believe in free will. So whatever he thinks is just something he can't help thinking. Just as I can't help thinking what I think. I think Coyne is an ass.

What Horgan has to say is much interesting because more thoughtful. Which doesn't mean I necessarily agree with it:

"And multiverse theories are about as testable as religious beliefs."

Religious beliefs are quite testable. Try practicing faith. Develop a prayer life. See what happens.

"My main objection to Christianity and other monotheistic faiths is the problem of evil. If God is all-powerful, just and loving, why then is existence so painful and unfair for so many people?"

At the heart of Christianity is the notion that God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten son as a propitiation for sin. Whether you believe that or not, it isn't as if it doesn't address the problem of evil, or, as Francis Spufford calls it, HPtFtU — the Human Propensity to Fuck things Up.
