… new gun legislation does not matter to the dead in California, nor did it in Chattanooga, Boston, Garland, Fort Hood, New York City and far too many other places. The attention and anger of Americans should also be directed at the elected leaders whose job is to keep us safe but who place a higher premium on platitudes and political correctness, excusing an ideology dedicated to the unfettered spread of ever more deadly terror attacks.

Hi Frank, I find the reasoning in the piece disingenuous. Most of the gun violence this year in the US has not been terror-related and even in the case of San Bernardino, improved gun ownership rules may have mattered because the guns were purchased legally. So, the focus ought not to shift from gun violence, even as we rightly focus our energies on terror.
ReplyDeleteGun violence in the US has actually dropped by 30 percent since reaching a high in the '90s. Moreover, California has very strict gun control laws, and this was able to buy what they wanted in spite of that. The idea that you can by means of legislation prevent bad things from happening is false. If you're prepared to commit murder the niceties of legislation are hardly a major concern to you. And, in this country, like it or not, the right to bear arms is a constitutional right, which is to say — as the Supreme Court has affirmed — an individual right. It is designed to, among other things, to protect the citizenry from a tyrannous government, which of course is why the current administration loves to do whatever it can to circumvent it. Live around the corner from a gun story and shooting range. I plan on giving myself a Christmas of a handgun and a license to carry. (I had guns years ago — I grew up in house in the middle of a woods— but got rid of them when I had kids in the house. Presuming I don't sink into a dangerous second childhood, we should be safe here.
ReplyDeleteThe other reason gun laws won't work as planned is that there are something like a hundred million illegal handguns in circulation here. Anyone with friends in low places can get one overnight.
Finally, the problem is a branch of Islam that wishes to make all of the rest of submit.
