I think Professor Weston in C. S. Lewis's space trilogy is quite convincingly bad. And what happens at the end of Charles Williams's All Hallows Eve is as scary as anything I've ever read.
Evil always puzzles me. I think often that really bad people began as really innocent and good children, and then I wonder what happened to them. Are we born good and become evil, or are we all infected by evil from the beginning?
ReplyDeleteI met someone once whom I had concluded was knowingly evil, someone I think took pleasure in doing evil. I told him as much. He smiled and walked away. At least one person died because of him, a young man in his thrall. But it not for that that he later ended up in prison.
