I don't know that I have a favorite critic. Van Wyck Brooks would be the nearest, though I guess he's thought of as a historian. But The Flowering of New England is practically a prose poem, as is D. H. Lawrence's Studies in Classic American Literature, another favorite of mine (it is also, at times, very funny).
