The United Kingdom and Europe …

… Bruce Charlton's Notions: Londinium: The Fourth Rome? Guest Post by John Fitzgerald.

An interesting way, for me, of reimagining the UK and its connection with Europe is to reflect on the original 'Britain' - the Roman province of Britannia. I find the novels of Rosemary Sutcliff, set in Roman and post-Roman Britain, a great imaginative stmulus here. They delineate superbly the ambivalent nature of Britain's relationship with the continent.
