Maybe it's time for me to try Davenport's fiction again. About 40 years ago, the poet Rosanna Warren, in an attempt to civilize her biologist boyfriend (one of my pals), gave him a list of modern authors to read. I've enjoyed Naipaul, Calvino, Garcia Marquez and others since getting a copy of the list, but Davenport's dense allusions utterly defeated me at the time. Time to find out how much I've learned in the intervening years!
