Hmm …

… As Noir as It Gets - Los Angeles Review of Books. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

I am not persuaded that this does as good a job of depicting things after the war as the reviewer seems to think. But I was born just before we entered the war and was a kid when the war was over and knew people who served, including some who had what was then called shell shock. Our neighborhood butcher had spent time in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. This strikes me as someone trying to imagine what it was like in terms of a contemporary outlook.
