Good Lord. I started taking take care of myself — making my own breakfast and lunch, getting myself off to school — when I entered the fourth grade. My mother and grandmother, and my brother was in high school, needing to leave early to get there. He was soon out working, too, and I was pretty much left to myself. Loved it.
