Caveat emptor …

… A new book says married women are miserable. Don’t believe it. - Vox. (Hat tip, Dave Lull.)

This is only the most recent example of a visible trend — books by prestigious and well-regarded researchers go to print with glaring errors, which are only discovered when an expert in the field, or someone on Twitter, gets a glance at them.
Once upon a time, I copyedited books — for likes of Lippincott and Fortress Press. Maybe publishers don't have copy editors anymore. When I was a copy editor, I kept my eyes open for questionable theses.
